So, you want to start tying your own flies? First I suggest you get a cheap fly tying kit. Second, start to know your tools:
Whip finisher- used to tie a knot at the end of the fly
Hackle pliers- used to hold stuff
scissors- well you should know what they are
tweezers- to hold or pinch something
There is a lot of other tools for advanced flies, but you are just getting started so you will not need them. Okay, now that you know what the tools are, lets start fly tying. I would recommend, tying an egg as your first fly. It is a killer trout, steelhead, and salmon fly. First you will need any color yan you want for the main part of the fly. Use an egg/caddis hook sizes 2-8 is fine. I recommend a 4. You will need thread and a hook. Use the same color thread as the main body. Also you will need some red yarn. Start by wrapping the thread behind the eye down to half way.
Put the base color thread down and then the red yarn on the hook. Wrap over it a couple of times.
Wrap 2 in front and 2 in the back. Wrap it a couple of times in front and whip finish. Then pick up all of the yarn and hold it up and cut straight a little bit above the hook.
Congrats, you just tied your first fly!
Go catch some fish with it now! Please comment if you have a suggestion or question.
